What is your opinion about the Evolution of Christian Music?

Evolution of Christian Music

If you went to attend  Sunday Service  at your local church  15 years ago  the worship music and instrumentation would probably look alot different  than the average  Christian  Church does today.

The songs would mostly be hymns and the singing might be accompanied by an organ/ piano maybe an acoustic guitar. Very rarely would you see a  full acoustic drum set  on the stage. Yes there were some forward thinking pioneer Christian musicians that would field a whole band but again that was rare.  

There were Christian musical artist like Mercy Me and Amy Grant That were paving the way but most local churches had not fully accepted this changing tide when it came to worship music. Today Christian music has taken some giant leaps forward . It is attracting more  people from the secular world.  The worship team ( bands) sound like Modern Rock  even Rap  / Hip Hop  and country.  

If you listen to a Christian radio station you can hear influences of several styles of music now.. Because of this ever changing genre musical artists from the secular world starting to take notice. The days  when it wasn’t cool or hip to be a Christian are  slowly  fading into the past. 

I  am of the belief that  this change  in thinking on the part of churches is partially  responsible for  attracting more ‘Newcomers” than ever before.. The person  that was invited to a church by a friend or co – worker maybe a relative but hasn’t  attended regularly at any church.. 

Once they’ve experienced the  energy that only the Holy Spirt can bring  along with the modern  music, capped off by the word of God. , Chances are they are going to come back at least one more time. Or they tell their friends and bring them. I am speaking from experience .. 

I was in the Secular Rock world , I made my living for several years playing and writing music mostly Rock.  I have worked with members of Tom Petty, Bernard Fowler from the Rolling Stones, and members of the American Idol house band. 

I am now a worship leader at my church and have been for 9 years. I have seen the transformation of newcomers  to followers of Jesus Christ first hand.  So next time someone invites you to church with them you should go and check it out. 

You may be surprised at what you hear and see..You might actually enjoy yourself.  My next subject will be about the technical changes of equipment used by worship  leaders .
